AI Optimization (GEO) 2026 Guide
More and more people search for answers directly from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews instead of a search engine. In this guide, we cover what AI optimization (GEO) is and how to succeed at it.
AI optimization (GEO) makes sure your company shows up and gets mentioned when customers look for answers from AI instead of a search engine.
When a buyer asks AI (ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity) for recommendations, the answer typically names only 2–5 companies. Either you're one of them, or you're invisible entirely. There's no middle ground. We optimize your site's content, structure and technology so AI applications find, understand and recommend your company as a trustworthy source.
-

What is AI optimization (GEO)?
AI optimization means developing a site's content, structure and reputation so AI applications find your company and surface it in their answers. It's called GEO (Generative Engine Optimization), because it concerns generative AI applications like ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.
A closely related term is AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), which refers specifically to AI-assisted search, such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode features. In practice, GEO and AEO overlap so much that it makes sense to treat them as one. In this guide, AI optimization refers to both.
The goal is simple: when a potential customer asks AI something your product or service is the answer to, your company gets mentioned — and described correctly.
How does GEO differ from SEO?
GEO isn't a replacement for search engine optimization — it's an extension of it. AI applications rely on the same foundation as search engines: technical accessibility, clear content and external authority. If these basics are in good shape, they benefit visibility everywhere, not just in one channel.
There are differences too:
- Goal. SEO aims for rankings in search results and clicks. GEO aims for your company being mentioned in an AI answer and recommended as a source.
- Unit. SEO competes for keywords and whole-page rankings. GEO can see AI surface a single paragraph instead of an entire page.
- Question format. People type short search terms into a search engine. They ask AI longer, naturally phrased questions and expect a direct answer.
- Writing style. AI favors clear, concise, unambiguous text and structured data (e.g. schema markup) that help it understand what your company does and sells.
- Measurement. SEO results are tracked with rankings and traffic. AI visibility needs its own measurement approach, because mentions don't show up in traditional analytics.
- Variation. Search results are relatively stable. AI answers can vary from one query to the next.
Where do AI answers show up?
AI answers appear in three main environments:
- Conversational AI assistants, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. The user asks a question and gets a written answer, which can include recommendations and source links.
- AI search engines, such as Perplexity, which pull information from the web and compile it into an answer with source references.
- AI answers inside traditional search engines, such as Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which appear alongside or in place of search results.
AI is also increasingly built into browsers, phones and tools, so buyers encounter AI answers even when they don't open an AI application on purpose. Each environment works a little differently and draws on different sources, which is why it's worth checking your visibility in more than one place.
How does AI decide who to mention?
No outsider knows the exact mechanism, and it varies from one application to another. Based on experience and publicly available information, though, the same factors tend to influence the answer most often:
- What the model already knows. AI is trained on a huge body of data and has learned which companies are associated with which topics. A strong, consistent brand online helps here.
- What it finds when it searches. Many applications search the web while forming an answer. That means your site needs to be technically readable, and the content needs to answer the buyer's question precisely.
- What other sources reference. AI favors sources that trusted, industry-relevant sites reference. Mentions, links, reviews and industry publications build credibility.
- How clear and consistent the information is. If different sources describe your company inconsistently, AI can't rely on it. A clear, unambiguous description of what you do and for whom increases your odds of being mentioned.
- Freshness. Updated content with a clear date is more trustworthy than outdated content.
Because answers vary, a single mention doesn't say much. What matters is how often, and in what context, your company comes up across repeated queries.
Why does AI optimization matter?
- AI answers partly replace lists of links: users get a direct answer and rarely scroll further.
- Visibility is essentially binary. You're either part of the answer, or you're not.
- AI traffic is hard to track with traditional analytics, so the problem doesn't show up in your metrics. It just quietly eats away at your opportunities.
- Many industries haven't started systematic AI optimization yet, so getting ahead is easier right now than it will be in a couple of years.
Wondering whether your company shows up in AI answers?
Contact usDoes GEO actually work, or is it just a trend?
ChatGPT and other LLMs haven't replaced Google. Google is still by far the most used search channel, even though AI tool usage has grown fast. Search is fragmenting across more channels, rather than shifting entirely to one new tool.
A lot of what's marketed as GEO is already part of good modern SEO: clear content structure, structured data, strong technical performance and a brand recognized as a trustworthy source regardless of search ranking. GEO isn't something you need to start from scratch. It builds on strong search engine optimization and extends it to new channels: AI answers, conversational search and social search.
How do you optimize content for AI?
The good news is that the methods are mostly the basics of good content production:
- Answer the question right away. Start a section with a direct, concise answer, and go deeper afterward. That way AI can lift the answer as-is.
- Use buyer questions as headings. Headings phrased the way a customer would actually ask make content easier to find and quote.
- Write unambiguously. State clearly what your company does, for whom, and where. Avoid marketing jargon and vague promises.
- Keep paragraphs self-contained. AI can surface a single paragraph, so each one should work without the surrounding text.
- Add structured data. Schema markup (organization, product, FAQ) tells machines what a page contains.
- Make sure of technical access. Check that crawlers aren't accidentally blocked and that content loads without heavy scripting.
- Back up claims with evidence. Figures, sources, customer references and named experts add credibility.
- Build mentions beyond your own site. Industry publications, directories, partners and review sites affect how AI sees you.
- Keep content up to date. Update your most important pages regularly.
How we carry out AI optimization
- Visibility audit. We build a list of the questions buyers typically ask in your industry and test whether your company is mentioned in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews' answers — and in what light, compared to your competitors.
- Answer-ready content. We reshape your content to answer buyers' questions directly and concisely, as described above.
- Structured data and technical accessibility. We make sure AI crawlers can access your site and understand its content. Many sites block this by accident. We add the necessary schema markup.
- Authority and mentions. We build mentions and links from trustworthy, industry-relevant sites.
- Ongoing monitoring. AI models keep changing, so visibility is measured regularly and actions are updated accordingly — not once a year.
What's worth measuring?
- How often, and in what tone, your company is mentioned in AI answers to buyer questions.
- How your visibility compares to your 2–3 most important competitors.
- Which sources AI draws its information about your company from.
- The trend over time. A single measurement shows a snapshot, but progress needs to be tracked monthly, since answers vary from one query to the next.
The most common AI visibility mistakes
- No measurement. Without regular monitoring, AI visibility is guesswork. The problem doesn't show up in any traditional report.
- AI crawlers get blocked by accident. Many sites unknowingly restrict crawler access for technical reasons, which means AI can't access the content at all.
- GEO treated as a separate project. If your technical and content SEO foundation isn't solid, there's no point chasing AI visibility as a bolt-on extra.
- Expecting results to be permanent. AI models and their answers keep changing, so a one-off optimization isn't enough.
What does AI optimization cost?
Our services start at [X] €/month. [Fill in your own price range and what's included.] The price depends on factors like the current state of your SEO foundation, the scope of the audit, and the number of questions and competitors tracked. A visibility audit alone is often a lighter first step than an ongoing, broad optimization service.
How long does it take to get results?
The first changes can appear within a few weeks, since some AI models pull information directly from the web in real time. More stable, reliable visibility typically builds up over 3–6 months, similar to traditional SEO.
Need help with AI optimization?
Request a quoteCan you do AI optimization yourself?
Partly, yes. On your own, you can, for example:
- Test how your company shows up in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity's answers by asking customers' typical questions.
- Rewrite your most important service pages to be clearer and start sections with direct answers.
- Check that your site isn't blocking crawlers.
- Update your company information so it's consistent across channels.
It's harder to do this systematically: building a repeatable measurement approach, identifying technical barriers, and telling a real signal apart from random variation in AI answers. That easily takes time, and without comparative tracking it's hard to know what's working. We're also happy to provide training if you'd like to learn to run the monitoring yourselves.
AI optimization and the future
Search isn't shifting entirely into one channel — it's fragmenting across several: traditional search, AI answers and social search. A company that builds visibility everywhere, not just on Google, is in the best position no matter which direction search goes next.
Frequently asked questions about AI optimization
Does GEO replace traditional SEO?
No. GEO builds on a strong SEO foundation and extends visibility to new channels. They shouldn't be done separately.
Why don't we see AI traffic in our analytics if it's talked about so much?
AI-assisted traffic is still hard to track with traditional analytics tools, and a missing mention in an answer doesn't show up in any report. That's why a separate measurement approach is needed.
How do you measure visibility in ChatGPT and Gemini?
We build a set of questions based on your industry and buyers' questions, and test it regularly, multiple times, so the result shows a trend rather than a one-off coincidence.
Is GEO just a trend?
Partly. Google is still clearly the largest search channel, but the importance of AI answers is growing, and the basics (technical accessibility, clear content, authority) are worth having in order regardless.
How quickly does visibility in AI answers change?
Some models update in real time, others more slowly. That's why visibility is tracked continuously rather than with a one-off measurement.
